Traders have always been fascinated when they saw share price appeared with regular time and price cycles. There were no proven scientific explanation that why stocks, currencies or commodities are moving in cycles, but traders are seeing empirical evidence over and over again.

Apparently, cycle traders believe that stock market is cyclical, so it is reasonable for us to try to understand more about the trading cycles. Hopefully that can give us another good edge to confirm a trading set up and being right more times.

Over the years, there were many so called experts have attempted to find out the right model, but those that I found practical are the wave analysis by R.N. Elliott in 1930 and the geometric, time and price square and the angles from W.D.Gann in 1902.

Actually Gann has talked about wave before Elliott does: "A bull or bear campaign in stocks or the average runs out in 3 or 4 sections..."

Cycle traders, take note of this: Gann and Elliott cycles only present probabilities... there are no certainties. The question is: How do we integrate these models into our analysis strategy? I don't trade just by wave or Gann, the only time that I would trade alone with one analysis is with "chart pattern".

Elliott wave traders - I find some Elliott techniques are quite academic only suitable for study or research purpose. However I found the wave analysis are very helpful in determining the trend momentum or the start of a new trend. I analysis the market with a basic 3 sections or 5 waves...

Gann traders - I have to admit that there were uncountable times that I found Gann analysis pinpointing some very accurate turning point well ahead in months or years. In my trading diary, I have written down all the important points months ahead, some in years ahead in forecasting time aspect. The squares that I use all the time are: yearly square 144 and 90 square, weekly square of 52, daily square of 144 and 90, square of price and time, true trend line, geometric division of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4...etc. I don't use geocentric planets, heliocentric planets, planet angle, astrology analysis, although they do reflex the some point most of the time.

Many people have attempted to imitate trading mythology of W.D.Gann, some claim to have found the single fundamental key: swing, time and price square, Gann wheel ... etc. By investigating the life history of W.D.Gann, you would have known that this man has done enormous amount of research work with tuck loads of study papers which later purchased by Billy Jones. Therefore the Gann analysis is from many direction of his work and no one particular method can work well all the time.

There are no secret square, magic planet or Saturn aspect which can show you the money for every trade. If you are here to find the "lord of the ring", then you will be disappointed.
